The linked report reads a population of a shade under 600,000 for Washington DC and 143 murders in 2009 for a "per 100,000" slightly under the reported 24 but nowhere near the 6 you suggest.

I suppose you could accuse the author of using selective stats by citing only DC and not the surrounding communities but the focus of the discussion is the safety of visitors and, if I'm not mistaken, the majority of tourist attractions, hotels, points of interest etc. are within DC and not some out lying bedroom community.

Hi, I have a problem with the report from the journalist here.

"Mexico City’s drug-related homicide rate was 2.2 per 100,000. While it is not an exact comparison, since the Mexico database tracks specifically drug-related deaths, Washington, D.C.’s homicide rate for 2009, the latest year for which the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report is available, of 24 per 100,000 adds some perspective."

This is amazing, because according to the latest 'FBI Uniform Crime Report' [actual link provided] which is indeed from 2009, Washington, DC's murder rate is 6 per 100,000 - exponentially lower than 24.

http://www2.fbi.gov/ucr/cius2009/data/table_06.html

'Nowhere' does it say 24 per 100,000 on the FBI website. What is she looking at?

Washington also has half the murder rate of Mexico City, which renders her argument as worthless.

Regards.
